This week we made a big announcement – one that was bittersweet for both of us. We have reached an agreement with Nugget Markets, another family-owned and independent Northern California grocer, to sell both of our stores. The sale is set to close March 31, 2016, and we will both continue on in the business for six months to ease the transition.
We have, over the years, been approached by other companies, and none has impressed us with the commitment that the Stille family and the Nugget Markets team have made to both our employees and our communities. Quite simply they share our values:
- Our commitment to secure employment for our employees, who have helped us build our business, many of them with decades of service to us and to our community. All of our employees will remain on board with Nugget Markets if they choose to do so.
- Our commitment to our customers to provide unmatched, personal service and stores that are stocked with the very best in quality food and merchandise.
- Our commitment to our community, which has supported our businesses for nearly 53 years, and provided a loving home to our families.
You might be interested to know that Nugget Markets was founded in 1926 by the grandfather and great-grandfather of today’s CEO/President, Eric Stille. They – like us -- offer a unique, down-home yet progressive shopping experience that focuses on natural, organic and local products displayed alongside conventional and ethnic items, offering the best of all worlds. Nugget Markets has 15 stores in Marin, Solano, Yolo, Sacramento, Placer and El Dorado counties.
We are also proud to say that Nugget Markets has been on FORTUNE Magazine’s national “100 Best Companies to Work For” list for 10 consecutive years! This is a strong testament not only to the Stille family, but also to the quality of their leadership team and their employees, and it is exciting to think that our markets will join such a well-regarded family of markets.
We know you may have questions, so together with the Nugget Markets team, we have put together a list of frequently asked questions, which you can read here.
It’s been an absolute pleasure to serve and support Sonoma Valley since 1963. We thank all of our friends and customers who supported our business and gave us so many fond memories over these many years of growth and change in our community. And don’t worry, we aren’t going anywhere yet! We will be working in the markets over the next six months to ease into retirement and to ensure a smooth transition. Please stop by and say hello, we look forward to the chance to thank you personally!
