Being in the food business, it’s incredibly important to us that our guests and communities are getting the food they need. No matter if you’re a guest in our stores or a community member seeking help from a food bank, we care deeply about the service we provide and the food we offer. That’s why we partner with food agencies and food banks to ensure our excess food is handled safely and feeds the hungry in our communities.
This year, we strengthened our Food Recovery Program in partnership with Feeding America. By writing new guidelines, we strengthened our relationships with local food banks (some of which we’ve been partnering with for almost two decades) and brought on new partners. By expanding the number of food categories we donate, we’re also able to provide more nutritious foods in greater quantities to more people in need! By working in local communities with partners like us, Feeding America serves more than 46 million people (of which 25% are seniors and 12.5% are children), or about 4.3 billion meals annually.
As part of our dedication to sustainability and social responsibility, we're thrilled to celebrate World Food Day—an international event with the goal of making healthy diets available to everyone. While it officially takes place on October 16, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations recognizes the whole month of October as dedicated to raising awareness and ending world hunger.
In honor of World Food Day, we're hosting a special World Food Day event at Sonoma Market on Saturday, October 26 from 10 a.m-1 p.m. Make sure to drop by to learn more about our commitment to social respondibility and sustainability—our sustainability coordinator and green gurus will also have a spinner with fun prizes for everyone who stops by!
