Nugget Markets’ ‘The Palate Project’ Benefits Local Non-Profits
Nugget Markets, in partnership with the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science (RMI), celebrates the world of great food, wine and beer while raising funds for two local causes: The Center for Land-Based Learning and the Yolo Food Bank. Formerly known as The Best of the Barrel, The Palate Project is scheduled for Friday October 4, 2013, 5pm – 8pm, at the Robert Mondavi Institute (RMI) for Wine and Food Science Good Life Garden. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased online at the Center for Land-Based Learning and RMI. Tickets are also available at any Nugget Market location. Guests must be at least 21years of age to purchase tickets and attend the event. Parking at the event is $8.
Guests attending The Palate Project will indulge in a wide range of signature dishes from Nugget Markets kitchens, as well as a variety of meats, seafood and vegetables, all freshly grilled on-site. Beer and cheese pairings, chocolate and wine pairings and at least 100 wine tastings from more than 40 wineries include local, organic and imported offerings; many of which are from UCD alumni winemakers.
This year, guests can also participate in the “Bid to Build Your Cellar” wine auction, to support programmatic activities at the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science. Auction items can be viewed on RMI’s website.
“Those attending The Palate Project will be supporting two great local non-profit organizations that truly resonate with Nugget Markets and our community - The Center for Land-Based Learning (CLBL) and the Yolo Food Bank (YFB), and specifically their collaborative partnership, the Food Bank Farmers Project,” says Eric Stille, president and CEO of Nugget Markets.
Food Bank Farmers offers beginning farmers, students in CLBL’s California Farm Academy, the opportunity to learn their trade with hands-on farm management, crop planning and fieldwork at a 1.5 acre farm plot near Davis. All of the food grown by these new farmers is harvested by volunteers and donated to the YFB for their Kids Farmers Market and the Children’s Harvest programs.
"Locally grown, fresh food for all is an achievable goal. We’re very proud that the Center for Land-Based Learning and Yolo Food Bank are working together to reach that goal,” says Mary Kimball, executive director of the Center for Land-Based Learning. She added, “We’re growing farmers too. It’s a win-win!”
The Palate Project is a fundraising event that originally began in Davis in the early 1990s as Nugget Market’s Best of the Barrel, which raised thousands of dollars for a large number of local non-profit organizations throughout the Sacramento Valley.
