As part of our commitment to environmental responsibility, Nugget Markets is engaged in an ongoing partnership with FishWise, a sustainable seafood non-profit based in Santa Cruz, California. We are excited to announce that this year Greenpeace USA has given our stores a score of 83 on their annual sustainable seafood report.
Greenpeace’s seafood sustainability scorecard, “Carting Away the Oceans” evaluates retailers on a number of different sustainable seafood practices, such as sustainable seafood policy, support of sustainability initiatives, labeling and promotion of sustainable seafood and number of red list seafoods.
How do I know if the seafood I purchase is sustainable?
Here at Nugget Markets, we understand the importance of transparency and are proud to provide the necessary tools for our guests to make educated choices. In our fresh seafood cases, you will notice that all of the seafood labels list the catch method, as well as a color-coded sustainability ranking:
Green – Best Choice
These species are from sources that are well-managed and caught or farmed in environmentally friendly ways.
Yellow – Good Alternative
These species are from fisheries or farms with good qualities, but some associated environmental concerns.
Red – Unsustainable
These species are caught or farmed in ways that can cause harm to the environment.
These rankings take into account many factors, such as species’ abundance and the management practices of the fishery and farm. We take great care in labeling our seafood so you can make informed and environmentally responsible purchases at our seafood cases. As a company, we also support environmental causes and policies with an emphasis on ocean conservation. Please visit Fishwise.org for more information about our program.
