Have you heard about the “Pinkies Down” campaign? The ultra-cool winemakers at Oregon’s Union Wine Co. started this trend, which encourages wine drinkers to focus more on the craft of winemaking, and less on the stuffiness and pretension that sometimes accompanies wine connoisseurship. In that spirit, they’ve released two of their most popular wines, Underwood Pinot Noir and Pinor Gris, packaged in aluminum cans.
The guys at Union have assured us that this unorthodox packaging does not affect the taste, and we agree — they sell the same varietals packaged traditionally in glass bottles, and there is virtually no difference in flavor between the canned and bottled options. Instead, the aluminum packaging makes these wines super portable: you can take them to the beach, camping, in the pool … all sorts of places where glass isn’t very practical. Just remember to keep those pinkies down when taking your first sip!
