Step off the beaten path and explore some of the unique wines Nugget Markets has to offer as part of our new “Adventure Series.” These palate-pleasing libations include uncommon varietals and wines that hail from lesser-known growing regions of the world. “Adventure Series” Wine will highlight one unique wine a week to help you explore some curious kinds and unusual finds in our selection. Check out some of these unique varietals featured in the series:
- Count Karlolti Gruner Veltliner, Hungary: The Count Karolyi Gruner Veltliner is a Hungary-grown and produced white wine that is dry and intrinsically balanced. This wine is fruit forward with aromas of green apples and gooseberries and has perfect acidity. Enjoy with shellfish, veal or pork!
- Macedon Pinot Noir, Macedonia: Macedonia might not be the first place you would look for pinot noir, but in fact it shares the same latitude as Burgundy and Russian River, where world-class pinots are produced. Macedon Pinot Noir is 100% pinot noir, with no barrel aging. It is easy drinking with great fruit and complexity. This wine will work all around the holiday table, pairing with the turkey as well as the cranberries.
- Mayu Pedro Ximenez, Chile: Mayu Pedro Ximenez is a white wine from the Elqui Valley, one of the newest wine-producing regions in Chile. The balanced flavor offers pleasant floral and fruit aromas, with fresh acidity, minerality and a long finish. Mayu Pedro Ximenez varietal pairs well with shellfish and other seafood.
- Sanguineti Cannonau di Sardegna, Italy: Made of Cannonau red-wine grapes, often known as Grenache grapes in other areas, Sanguineti Cannonau hails from the island of Sardinia, Italy. This medium-bodied red wine has an earthy backbone, dry complexion and aromas of cherry, plum and pomegranate. Try this wine with a broad range of food pairings, like pasta, pork, chicken or summertime seafood.
- Domaine des Baumard Savennières, Loire Valley, France: This dry white wine made from Chenin Blanc grapes of the Loire Valley in France has substantial substance while staying beautifully balanced on the palate. With its distinct minerality, Domaine des Baumard Savennières pairs well with fish and other seafood.
- Giaocato Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc, Slovenia: Giocato Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc, come to our stores all the way from Goriška Brda, Slovenia. Hailing from a sub-Mediterranean climate, these refreshing, crisp wines have good minerality at great value. Giocato Pinot Grigio pairs nicely with vegetable, poultry and fish dishes. Try the Sauvignon Blanc with spiced fish or chicken dishes or herb salad.
- The Wolftrap Red, South Africa: Grapes from the Swartland are used for South Africa’s The Wolftrap Red. The blend features intense flavors of blackberry and pepper and soft, balanced tannins. The Wolftrap Red’s lingering flavors lend themselves to easy drinking.
