Persimmon season is officially a go. If you haven’t tried one of these sweet, sumptuous fruits yet, October through December is the perfect time to take a bite. As well as being delicious, these beautiful orange fruits are also powerful in the health department. A single fuyu persimmon (about 2 ½ in diameter) supplies more than 50% of the recommended Daily Value of vitamin A and 20% of vitamin C needs! Persimmons also contain disease-fighting antioxidants called catechins, similar to what’s found in green tea.
Whether you plan on cooking with your persimmons or eating them raw, different varieties are available for every palate and purpose. The Fuyu persimmon eats like an apple and can be sliced for a colorful addition to salads. Hachiya persimmons ripen to a soft texture, which makes them an excellent base for muffins, breads and other baked goods.
