There’s nothing like a festive dash of color to brighten up the cold winter months, and poinsettias are the plant for the job! Apart from Christmas trees, poinsettias are perhaps the most iconic holiday plant of the season. To help celebrate National Poinsettia Day (and all your other winter holidays), enjoy a few fun facts about this festive plant!

• Unlike most flowering plants, the poinsettia is best known for its leaves—often as red as Rudolph’s nose so bright!
• Poinsettias grow in many different natural colors. Some of the holiday hues we carry include Red, White, Burgundy, Pink, Jingle Bells, Peppermint and Marble!
• When picking our your perfect poinsettia, look for a fresh plant with buds, especially ones that aren’t open yet.
• While poinsettias aren’t poisonous, they should not be eaten as they can cause digestive issues and pose choking hazards. To be safe, it’s best to keep these decorative plants out of reach of small children and pets.
• Poinsettias are grown all across the US, but California grows the highest number of poinsettia plants, including ours! Our poinsettias come from producers in Santa Barbara, Watsonville and Half Moon Bay.
• Despite being known as a winter holiday plant, poinsettias are actually very sensitive to the cold. They are best kept indoors at 60°-72°F and away from drafts.
• To keep your poinsettia going strong, water when the surface soil is dry to the touch. For best results, water thoroughly and discard excess water in the saucer.
