Extraordinary Sustainability: Did U Know?
Please note that this is an older article. Any products or services pictured or described may have changed or may no longer be available. Thank you for visiting!
One important way we’re committed to sustainability is through social responsibility. Part of that means respecting, appreciating and valuing where everyone is at with sustainability, as we all enjoy different levels of understanding when it comes eco-friendly practices. We value the opportunities we have to share what Nugget Markets is doing to be a sustainable grocer, and our sustainability team loves engaging with every single guest at community events like our company-hosted Foodie Fests.

We value the opportunities we have to share what Nugget Markets is doing to be a sustainable grocer, and our sustainability team loves engaging with every single guest at community events like our company-hosted Foodie Fests.
If you haven’t been to a Foodie Fest yet, it’s basically a festival of food where you get to mix and mingle with some of our favorite gourmet producers. Guests get to taste a variety of delicious items we carry in our stores, as well as spin the sustainability wheel for helpful sustainability prizes like reusable straws! We host Foodie Fests in the spring and fall, so be on the lookout for the next one. Even if you aren’t able to make it, here are some of fun facts we like to share with our guests:
Did U Know 72% of waste leaving our stores is recycled? In 2019, we diverted 5,300 tons of waste from landfills!
Did U Know we donate 500,000 pounds of food to food banks every year? Learn more about our nonprofit partners in our blog, Feeding Our Communities.
Did U Know the inedible food that Nugget Markets can’t sell turns into compost or fertilizer? That’s about 4 million pounds annually!
Did U Know that in the last six years, we've decreased our water use by 9% and saved 3.9 million gallons of water? Our goal is an additional 3% decrease each year!
Did U Know that we retrofitted our stores company-wide with LEDs? LEDs produce almost all of their energy as light (none lost to heat), last longer and take less power!
Did U Know that the 10-cent bag fee goes back to our sustainability program and provides the resources for us to create more sustainable decisions?
Did U Know the Davis Nugget Markets, as well as the Nugget Markets in West Sacramento and Woodland, are all participating in Yolo Bonus Bucks? This gives recipients of CalFresh the ability to purchase their produce at 50% off!
Did U Know we love learning how our guests are finding sustainability success? Some practices our guests have shared with us include packing their children’s lunches in lunch pails and Tupperware instead of paper or plastic bags, filling buckets of water as their shower heats up and then using that to water their plants, turning off the lights when they leave a room, and volunteering with one of their favorite charities.
Did U Know that we appreciate you keeping your money local by shopping with us, a local, family-owned business? 😀
Did U Know that we appreciate being a part of your community? Thank U for all U do to keep your communities thriving!
