When is California-grown asparagus season?
California-grown asparagus season usually lasts from mid-March through April, but Mother Nature has the final say!
Where does Nugget Markets' asparagus come from?
While it's in season, we’re thrilled to source amazing asparagus fresh from local farmers like Durst Organic Growers in Yolo County and other Golden State growers.
What should I look for when shopping?
Pick asparagus that’s bright green or purple and firm. Size isn’t an indication of quality, but the cut ends should be plump and not shriveling.
How should I store my asparagus?
Store asparagus in the refrigerator with the cut ends wrapped in a wet paper towel for 3–4 days. Do not freeze.
What are some easy ways to prepare it?
For one, you can simply season with salt, pepper and olive oil and roast on baking sheet for 5–6 minutes at 425°F. Alternatively, you could blanch your asparagus in boiling salted water for 20–30 seconds, then, if serving cold, shock in ice water after blanching.
Is there anything I can do with the trimmed off ends?
If you don’t want to waste the woody ends, you can turn them into soup! Asparagus ends can be a little fibrous, so make sure you give them a good long turn in the blender.
What else can I do with fresh asparagus?
We’re so glad you asked! If you’re ready to get cooking, we suggest giving these amazing recipes a try!
