Did you know cherries have been enjoyed for millennia? What was first documented as being cultivated in Greece around 300 B.C. is now one of our favorite summer crops from the Pacific Northwest! Vibrant, sweet, juicy and flavorful, Northwest Cherries are grown by farmers in the Washington, Oregon, Utah, Idaho and Montana from June through August in varieties like Bing, Rainier and more.
Along with tasting like a sweet drop of summer, fresh cherries are also what you might call a super fruit! According to Northwest Cherries, fresh cherries are…
- Filled with antioxidants
- A source of ellagic acid and anthocyanins
- Naturally anti-inflammatory
- A source of melatonin which can promote healthy sleep
- High in fiber
- A great source of Vitamin C
- Cholesterol, sodium and fat free
- Low on the glycemic index
- A good source of potassium
- Low calorie (less than 100 calories for a serving of 21 cherries)
All in all, fresh cherries are an ideal summer snack when you’re looking for something sweet, healthy and delicious. Even better, they’re great for freezing so you can stock up now while they’re still in season and freeze some for later.
