A Letter from Our Chairman of the Board
It’s hard to believe Nugget Market has already been serving our communities for a century, but time sure flies when you’re having fun! Read on for a letter from our Chairman of the Board and fourth-generation grocer, Eric Stille.
It’s hard to believe Nugget Market has already been serving our communities for a century, but time sure flies when you’re having fun! It all started in 1926, when Mack and Will Stille followed their dreams and opened the very first Nugget Market in Woodland, California. They worked hard to give their family business the strong foundation of quality, creativity, hard work, great service, and innovation which we still uphold today.
From the very beginning, Mack and Will weren’t afraid to push limits and think outside the box. Back when most grocery stores didn’t offer meat, they had a cattle ranch where they raised beef for the market—talk about farm to fork! We also purchased produce direct from farmers and co-ops and were the first store in town to incorporate a deli and bakery.
As our grocery family grew, so did our selection of fresh, high-quality groceries, including unparalleled perishables like local and organic produce, sustainable seafood, and grass-fed meat, along with chef-led Kitchens, in-house Coffee & Juice Bars and an expanded selection of artisan cheeses and domestic and international wines and spirits.
After all these years, we’re still dedicated to quality, selection, service, and, most importantly, our amazing guests and associates. We’re honored to serve our neighbors every single day, and so very grateful for our world-class team who makes everything we do possible. In fact, Nugget Market has even been on FORTUNE’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list for 18 years!
For the last century, we’ve been honored by the unfailing support of our wonderful guests and communities and are thrilled to serve them in all we do. It’s been an extraordinary journey so far and even better knowing we’re just getting started.

Chairman of the Board
P.S. Ever wonder where Nugget Market got its name? Rumor has it an 8-year-old girl won a contest to name the first store back in 1926, inspired by the gold color of the columns in front of our first store and its proximity to Gold Rush country!
